for a “premiership team”: Kioo Marketing in South Devon, where he has taken on a new role as a Marketing and Social Media Executive.
Fly half Dan, 26, had decided to leave Albion for a new opportunity with a Rugby Pro D2 team in France after spending the latter part of the 2017-18 season out of the game through injury. He ruptured a finger tendon and then broke his arm in the gym, needing an operation to insert a metal plate into his arm.
However, following an announcement by Plymouth Albion earlier this week, Dan has now decided to stay at Albion, stating; “Plymouth Albion is a great club that I enjoy being a part of and that goes from players to coaches, to those behind the scenes and the supporters. The bigger picture was that I felt like I was leaving something that brought me happiness, to chase something that was never going to fulfil what I wanted it to.”
Dan has been working his way back to full fitness and, with the all-clear from his surgeon, hopes to be in the Albion line-up when pre-season friendlies start in August.
In the meantime, he’s getting up to speed with a challenging new role off the pitch.
“Working at Kioo provided the perfect opportunity to have a look at something I was interested in and I’m really pleased that they’ve decided to take me on,” says Dan. “It’s a different challenge but one that I’m looking forward to. It’s something I’ve never done before and I believe it’s setting me up for a life outside rugby.”
At school Dan was always interested in sport. “All I ever wanted to do was become a professional rugby player,” he says. “Experience is a wonderful thing and I can take things I’ve learned in rugby and bring them into this job.
“Social media is really important and I’m very interested in it with Twitter and Instagram accounts. I want to see social platforms as a good thing. They’re great in any kind of sport because you can share things with the fans. I think it needs to be a positive space where you can engage with people, and large numbers of people at that.
“A lot of people are connecting with sport through social media – it’s where they are getting their sports news and score lines. I’m really excited to be learning more about it.”
Leon Theisinger, Managing Director at Kioo Marketing, says; “As an avid fan of Rugby and Plymouth Albion, I’m absolutely delighted that Dan has chosen to stay at the club. Dan is a highly talented individual who can make a real difference to Albion this season and I’m looking forward to seeing Dan back on the pitch for the upcoming season”.
Commenting on Dan’s appointment at Kioo Marketing, Leon said “It’s amazing that we’ve been able to offer Dan a position here at Kioo Marketing. Some will know that at Kioo Marketing we look after all of Plymouth Albion’s PR, Marketing & Commercial activity, such as; social media activity, sponsorship & hospitality, so Dan’s appointment is one that will strengthen the work we do for Plymouth Albion, whilst providing Dan with a ‘life after rugby’, which I believe it vitally important for the future of all professional sports individuals”.
